Do you AKA grad members really volunteer to sponsor you?

I'm interested in joining a grad chapter of AKA in Houston. I'm active in my community (Urban League, MBA Associations, Mentoring, Church, etc.) I've joined organizations that interest me, not necessarily to meet members. That being said, I don't know many members. I recently attended an event with one of the grad chapters and the members basically sat with each other and talked with each other leaving the non members to congregate. My question, will someone really volunteer to sponsor an aspirant? Do they want to get to know us at their events?
